FAQ

What can I expect from counseling?

During therapy sessions, aspects of your personal life will be discussed that may cause emotional discomfort or distress. It is not uncommon to experience unpleasant feelings, such as sadness, guilt, shame, frustration or anger following therapy sessions. Experiencing these feelings may be necessary in order to achieve healing. I will oftentimes recommend homework (suggested readings, reflection, journaling, etc…) to be completed outside of sessions. Ultimately, the success of therapy will depend upon you and your own willingness and motivation to change.

How long are sessions?

Each session is 45-60 minutes long. I generally spend some time at the beginning of each session reviewing what was discussed at the previous session, and make sure there is time at the end to process what was learned or gained from the current session.

Do you accept insurance?

I am currently accepting select BCBS plans and Medicaid. Both require a diagnosis in order to submit claims. Out-of pocket session rates, which do not require a diagnosis are very reasonable. All major credit cards and Health Savings cards are accepted. A sliding scale rate is offered for those with limited income.

How often should I have counseling sessions?

The frequency of sessions depends upon the severity of the problem(s) being addressed and your own personal availability. In most cases, clients begin receiving counseling once per week. Once things in your life improve, sessions are phased out to bi-weekly. Prior to terminating counseling, I may offer monthly check-ins. But overall, the frequency of counseling is up to you. This is something we can discuss during your initial assessment.

What can I expect from a first session?

During the first session, I will conduct an initial assessment that will help determine your counseling needs. We’ll discuss your personal and family history, and decide together what goals to establish for treatment. If it is determined that your needs are beyond my professional scope of practice then I will assist you in finding another mental health professional.

How does online counseling work?

It is offered through a secure, HIPAA compliant site that ensures your session is confidential. Much like FaceTime and other video conferencing apps, we will be able to see one another and talk. It is recommended that you use a personal laptop in a private area that is free from distraction. With online counseling you can enjoy convenience, confidentiality and care!
